Laser Vein (Vascular) Treatment

If you suffer from unsightly red or purple veins on your face and body our new laser technology can help. Prominent veins on the surface of the skin can be caused by smoking, alcohol consumption, hormone changes or temperature changes. For some, they simply "run in the family".  They are very hard, and almost impossible to get rid of naturally. Laser vein treatment provides a very successful option in terms of reducing and removing these veins.

How does it work?

The laser beams target the affected area and homes in on the small red blood vessels underneath the skin which are causing the problem. The warmth of the laser also heats up collagen fibres, which in turn rebuild and support the blood vessels, this helps to delay the development of more thread veins.

The advanced laser technology machine can remove unsightly veins from all parts of the body. Small, facial veins can be treated quickly without bruising or complication. Spider veins and large blue leg veins can also be treated with excellent results.

Treatable areas include:

  • Face
  • Arms
  • Legs

Laser Vein Therapy Frequently Asked Questions

What does it feel like?

Most patients experience a stinging sensation as the pulses of energy is delivered through the hand piece. Although no local anaesthic or pain medication is typically required, many patients opt to use a topical aesthetic prior to treatment. Following the treatment, the pain is minimal to nonexistent.

How many treatments will I need?

Often, patients find that one or two treatments are sufficient. However, the number of treatments necessary depends on the number, colour, and size of the vessels being treated. You will receive advice on your own requirements in your consultation.  This is free of charge.

What happens after the treatment?

Although many patients report few if any side effects, those most commonly noticed are slight reddening and local swelling of the skin. These effects typically last for less than 24 hours. In some cases, some temporary bruising may occur. When larger veins are treated, a tan or brownish pigment may persist for a few weeks or months following treatment. Patients who have significant leg vein treatments may be advised to wear support hose for a short period of time.

Are there any restrictions on my activity after treatment?

Patients generally resume most normal activities immediately. However, it is recommended that you avoid vigorous activities such as strenuous exercise for the first 24 hours after treatment. The use of sunscreen is recommended on any treated areas exposed to the sun. As always, it is a good idea to limit your sun exposure.

When will I see results?

Most patients find that the majority of the treated veins have shown significant improvement within two to six weeks of treatment. However, your final results may not be apparent for several months. Over time, it is possible for new veins to appear, but these too can be removed with laser vein therapy.

How does Laser Vein Therapy work?

The Cutera CoolGlide systems deliver pulses of light energy which cause the blood within the vein to coagulate, eventually destroying the vessel which is later reabsorbed by your body. Blood flow will then be redirected to veins deeper below your skin’s surface, where it should be.

Can you treat varicose veins?

Knotty varicose veins are generally not good candidates. A careful evaluation with your Nurse will help you determine which areas can be treated.

What about blood blisters and port wine stains?

Blood blisters or “haemangioma” respond very well to Laser Vein Therapy, usually with just one treatment. Patients with port wine stains and other vascular lesions who had given up on finding a solution have been overwhelmed by the success of their laser vascular treatments. Consult your nurse for a thorough evaluation.

Where can I get laser treatments?

Advanced laser therapy treatments are currently available in our Sheffield and Dublin and Galway clinics only - Birmingham coming in Jan 2010, with further clinics to receive laser machines during 2010.
