Hyperhidrosis - Excessive Sweating Treatment

The main reason to have this form of treatment is to treat excessive perspiration - underarm, palms and feet. Common side effects are slight swelling and occasionally slight bruising to the injected area.

Axillary Hyperhidrosis

Axillary Hyperhidrosis is a medical term given to excessive sweating that occurs to an extent that a person gets symptomatically bothered by it because of  wet marks and disturbing strong odour resulting in social embrassment.

It can be idiopathic(unknown) in origin(primary hyperhidrosis) or secondary hyperhidrosis caused by endocrine disorders e.g. hyperthyroidism, menopause, obesity and psychological disorders with excessive nervousness etc.

It can appear at any age from adolescence around the onset of puberty to at later stages of life and is slightly more common in females than males. It is not harmful physically to health but can be devastating psychologically due to it’s very negative effect on social, professional and intimate relationships, destroying self esteem, self confidence and sense of well being and this in turn can lead to the individuals being socially withdrawn.

In view of the devastating psychological affects that this condition can cause, people suffering from this condition first try different anti-perspirants and de odorants and then opt to seek medical advise and intervention. The treatments available can range from being medical, interventional with minimally invasive treatments performed under local anesthesia and surgical requiring general anaesthesia and hospitalisation. The interventional treatments are as follows :

1.Treatment by Botulinum toxin :

Small amounts are injected into the skin where the sweat glands are situated and it blocks the nerves producing acetyl choline which stimulate the sweat glands. This treatment works quite well in most people but is temporary in nature as it lasts from 5-6 months.

2.Treatment by Laserlipolysis :

This is minimally invasive procedure performed under local anesthetic and majority of sweat glands in the skin are ablated by nd Yag laser giving a permanent relief of the condition.

3. Treatment by Vaser Liposelection :

This is again a minimally invasive procedure performed under local anesthesia and utilizes ultrasonic energy to abalte the sweat glands. This treatment is very effective and gives permanent relief of the condition.

4. Sympathectomy :

This surgical procedure involves dividing the sympathetic supply to the sweat glands and gives a permanent relief of the condition but requires general anesthesia and hospitalisation and due to it’s complications is rarely performed.
