The tissue damage may be caused by damage to the nervous system and compression of the nerves. The pain may be described as shooting, stabbing, burning or sharp. However, in other patients the symptoms are numbness or lack of sensation
Nerve pain can be very distressing and cause real suffering. You may be kept awake at night with shooting pains or find it painful to carry out your occupation (e.g. use a computer mouse) or hobby (e.g. play a musical instrument).
Treatment options include medication (i.e. painkillers such as paracetamol or codeine), but this can only mask the problem and will not cure it if the cause is a physical one i.e. compression of the nerves.
If the Repetitive Strain Injury symptoms you are experiencing are caused by compressed nerves, the good news is that there is now a surgical alternative to get to the source of the problem. Nerve decompression surgery could virtually remove neuropathic pain by relieving the compression on the nerves.
This procedure is little-known in the UK and Ireland, but is well-practised in the USA.
The treatment (carried out under General Anaesthetic) involves electrical stimulation of the trapped/compressed nerves in order to relieve the pain. The results are remarkable.
