Male Hair Baldness

A Common Phenomenon

Most men experience some degree of hair loss during their lifetime with some experiencing hair loss as early as their late teens and early 20′s. As men enter their 50's, they have a greater than 50% chance of experiencing some genetic baldness.

The psychological impact of male hair loss varies greatly, with some men boldly embracing their hair loss and even shaving their heads to others who struggle with loss of self-esteem and confidence as a result of their hair loss. The good news is that there are proven non surgical and surgical hair loss treatment available. Because hair loss is a progressive disease, early diagnosis and intervention is key. There are medical treatments that can prevent shedding or slow male hair loss in its early stages.

Androgenetic Alopecia is the most common cause of hair loss in men. It is caused by the effects dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a male hormone, on genetically susceptible scalp hair follicles. Because hair follicles in the front, top and crown of the head are the more sensitive to DHT than the back and sides, common hair loss patterns become evident and are easily identified by referring to the Norwood Classification Scale which describes the stages of Male Pattern Hair Loss.

The Norwood scale is a commonly used tool for classifying male pattern baldness.

This enables a Surgeon to diagnose the nature of hair loss and recommend an appropriate treatment plan.
